Twitter – Marketing Tool? or Waste of Time?

TwitterI have to be honest with you, I have long resisted using Twitter since its launch.  At first, I wondered who would care about anything that could be said in 140 characters or less – and much of what people “tweeted” about was dying their hair, going to the amusement park or kissing their latest crush.  Who cares?

But, as Twitter has grown to 7 to 8 million + users with 800,000+ Tweets per hour (Check out GigaTweet)  and can now be linked to SMS, blogs and websites, AND has become fodder for journalists especially with the media assault surrounding Ashton Kutcher’s challenge to CNN to reach 1 million followers this past April – I have begun to realize that there is some potential in the Twitterverse.

Twitter is basically a micro blog.  You need to use the same techniques on your Twitter account that you use on your regular blog (Read my series “Top Ten Geurrilla Blogging Techniques.) – only several times faster and several times more often!  One of my clients recently attended a conference for writers on marketing and promoting their books.  During the conference it was suggested that the authors start Twitter accounts and get tweeting at least 6 times per day … it was recommended they tweet 22 times per day for ultimate effectiveness!  That’s about 3 times each hour in an 8 hour day!

Do you have that kind of time?
