From Poor Web Design to Great Web Design.

Let’s take a current client, for example: their original site is pictured on the left. You can see the home page is cluttered with eleven different fonts and the header is so large none of the content can be seen until your scroll down. More concerning, is that most (90%) of the text on the site was incorporated into images and therefore unusable to the search engines. However, the client wanted to retain the overall color scheme and layout so as not to jar her current visitors.

As you can see, we re-envisioned the overall feel by intensifying the colors, reducing the width and modifying the header so visitors could get to the content more quickly. Additionally, we removed all of the text from the images and got that text on the page where the search engines could read it – this is one of the most common flaws I run into in a site designed by a graphic designer versus a web programmer. While this is still a work in progress you can see the immediate improvement in the site while still retaining its original character.
